A Statement from the Organizing Committee

Science is an international endeavor. Our meeting brings together researchers from many countries, and we regard the free movement of people and ideas across borders as one of the things that makes our field, and our community, worth belonging to.
That openness carries a responsibility to be clear about our values. We reaffirm, in the strongest terms, our opposition to war, occupation, and authoritarianism, and to the suppression of academic freedom in all its forms.
At the same time, we hold firmly to a distinction that we believe protects both our principles and our community: we condemn the actions of states, never the individual scientists who live under them. Researchers are not their governments. Many carry out their work under difficult, constrained, or repressive conditions, and some do so at genuine personal risk. We will not exclude, single out, or treat with suspicion any colleague on the basis of their nationality or the country in which they work. To do so would punish precisely the people a free scientific culture exists to protect.
We extend the same solidarity to scientists everywhere who face persecution, censorship, displacement, or exile for their work or their convictions. Our meeting is intended to be a place where they remain welcome, and where the value of their science is judged on its own terms.
